Welcome to our graphic novel course blog!

Hi Everyone,

I will be asking you to post to our course blog in the near future for class participation credit. You will be able to share your responses and ideas about what you are reading, writing, or drawing with the other Graphic Novel class sections. Many colleges are utilizing various technologies to enhance learning, so I thought it might be helpful for you to practice online discussions in case this is required of you in your future.

When you are at your computer alone, the extra time and solitude allows you the ability to perhaps think more deeply about something you have read or heard in class. Some people are great with answers "off the cuff" or enjoy discussion in class. Others are more reluctant or need more time to process ideas, so the blog can help fill those gaps.

You MUST consider the medium in which you shall participate. This means knowing that what you write is published for any and all on the Internet to read. If you are disrespectful or inappropriate, you will be unable to participate and will be disciplined accordingly. The posts on this blog should be related to the material we cover in our graphic novel course only!

Avoid repeating the ideas of others when you post! See Rubric for further requirements.

  9. Kazuo Koike was the first Japanese person to create a series of comics. His first comic series was very similar to the James Bond series.H opened a studio in 1980 and had many employees. Just some information.

  10. I feel like the only one actually working in the group, Matt Dahl is chatting it up with Lydia all the time and also trying to fix his Mac because his "cache" isn't working because of the fact that Macs are absolutely terrible.

"Want to see me make a pencil dissappear?"

  12. our group has been looking for information on Frank Miller for the past two days in class. We're trying to get a good balance of internet and textual sources. We are almost done finding sources of information and then we'll begin to get a good idea of who Frank Miller is and what he's done.

  13. Me and Jason used Infotrac to find quite a resourceful article that gave us ample information on controversy in the comic industry. This article also provided us with the titles of several books that cover a vast amount of intriguing information on this highly gripping topic.

  16. Project Update: Matt Dahl is describing his trip to see Victor Wooten with Mr. Quinn and we still haven't done much on this project. It would be a miracle if we get this project done on time with Matt in our group.

  17. Today my group and I are finishing up our research. We are trying to find more sources with textual and picture infromation. We also decided on what we wanted to do for our project in a presentation way. Of course I can't post what that is because you might steal our awesome idea.

  21. Batman The Dark Knight graphic novel is very different from the The Dark Kinght movie.

  22. My group and I began creating our project today.... so far it is looking good! Here is some factual information about Frank Miller. This is what I would like to call a "preview" of our final project. In 1986, DC Comics released writer-penciler Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, a four-issue miniseries printed in what the publisher called "prestige format" — a squarebound, rather than stapled; on heavy-stock paper rather than newsprint, and with cardstock rather than glossy-paper covers. It was inked by Klaus Janson and colored by Lynn Varley.

The story tells how Batman retired after the death of the second Robin (Jason Todd), and at age 55 returns to fight crime in a dark and violent future. Miller created a tough, gritty portrayal of Batman, who is often referred to as "the Dark Knight."

  23. Charlie and I have been working on Stan Lee's timeline and have been getting ready to start the typed up document part of the project. We learned more about Stan Lee's life as he was growing up and that he bacme an editor a the age of 17.

  24. So far my group has found several sites about comic book controversy in the 1950s. Did everyone know that in 1954 the Senate held an investigatory commitee on the harmful effects of comic books?

    ReplyDelete
  25. My group has used a variety of sources to find valuable information. I used a great book for the timeline. Brandon has used a book and a few websites as well as an article from the NYTimes. He wrote about Mad Magazine and is looking at famous people in the comics industry. Matt is currently using a book to add to his paper about the golden age of comics that he started by using a cool article from the Times. We all love research projects!!

  26. Our group is still working hard. We are about to start our construction of our powerpoint about the graphic novel 'The Dark Knight'.

  27. well my group is finally wrapping up our project. mags and moose have decided that they are going to do the art part of the project and make either a power poit or poster board while i am going to write the essay detailing the differences and similarities between The Dark Knight graphic Novel and movie.

  28. Our group is finalizing our project and will be ready to presesent on tuesday and fascinate everyone.

  29. Matt and I are working well with each other. Where almost done with our project and now were just working on citations and are on our paper.

  30. Today I started working on the visual part of this project by putting superheroes and other images on a powerpoint with some preset backgrounds. Then next to me is Charlie and he is supplying the good music and beats to keep me going in a early 1st block of english. Right now we are listening to the she wolf remix with shakira and tpain and Charlie wants me to mention that we will have a jaw dropping essay to go along with the visuals and that this is the end of our preview.

  31. My group is planning on citing important sources from the 1950s, when comic book hysteria gripped the nation. Did everyone know that the word crime was limited in comic books due to the restrictive comic code of the 1950s?

    ReplyDelete
  32. our group has uncoverd much information about the comic book controversy of the 1950's . We have seemed to leanr more about the worl dof grpahic novels and thir dark and explicit history

    ReplyDelete
  33. Its friday and now we are finishing up the paper and adding facts into our information that we will be presenting wednesday. Where was The "man" Stan Lee born? New York

    ReplyDelete
  34. Today moose isnt here but I am starting to construct the powerpoint with the information I have. I will have moose email me the rest of his information to me over the weekend so i can finish the project for monday so we can proofread it in class.

  35. Like Matt said its Friday finally and i'm finishing up the paper right now.The weekends here and its been a really long week.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The project is about finished. I finished my part of the project on Thursday because of the Freshman walk Friday. I know My group members are finsihing up the slideshow by adding pictures to support their ideas

    ReplyDelete
  37. So everything is done for the the project now we even have extra time to figure out what to mention and in what order should we present the following information to the class.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My group is adding to the visual component of the presentation, which at this point looks like the addition of actual controversial comics from the 1950s. This period of time seems rife with overreaction to these stories.

    ReplyDelete
  39. After further examination of controversial comics it seems that they were the explicit media of their day. And today just as then there are concerned parents and conservative groups that are worrying about he content of this media.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Another vital part of my groups presentation is the allegations of Fredric Wertham. He truly believed that comics were the source of all kinds of degenerate behavior among the youth. His reaction to comics seems to be similar to the response of media watchdog groups today.

  41. Our group did presentations recently and our presentation did not go as we hoped. Although it wasn't as good as a presentation as we planned we did get constructive critism which should help us in the near future. I've learned the only way to get good at something like presentations is to practice.
